Some question Jordan’s ability to work effectively

There were new calls for Eddie Jordan’s resignation Thursday evening, coming on the heals of another controversy involving the city’s top prosecutor.

“The criminal justice system in Orleans Parish will be stronger when Mr. Jordan is no longer the district attorney,” said Baty Landis, co-director of the group “Silence is Violence” – who held a small march Thursday.

Some of those marching told Eyewitness News they believe one of their top road blocks is the city’s top prosecutor and question his ability to do his job.

“Under the circumstances, I just don’t know how he can be effective,” said New Orleans resident Evelyn Turner.

Those circumstances Turner was referring to include the quintuple murder case that initially fell apart at the hands of the DA’s office. Jordan’s office couldn’t find the witness, but the New Orleans Police Department did.

There’s also the discrimination lawsuit against Jordan, filed by 36 of his former employees which could eventually cost tax payers millions.

Now, Jordan admits a man accused of robbing a gas station fled to his home just moments after the alleged robbery took place.

“It’s crazy that a dangerous person like that would be allowed in the district attorney’s presence, period let alone his house,” said the victim, Roy Joseph.

Mayor Nagin agreed the situation was bizarre.

“It’s a very strange occurrence that a robber would end up in DA’s home – that’s very unique,” Nagin said.

Councilwoman Shelley Midura said recent events involving the DA’s office have cast a dark cloud over New Orleans.

“Public safety is being threatened by all this mess,” she said – adding that her call for Jordan’s resignation hasn’t changed.

“I think it’s increasingly difficult for him to be effective,” Midura said.

Interim Councilman Mike Darnell said resigning is an option Jordan should consider, but said he’s not sure what it would fix.

“I don’t necessarily know that a resignation would solve the problems that people see in the office right now,” Darnell said.

Eyewitness News spoke with a representative in the DA’s office earlier Thursday in hopes of giving Jordan a chance to respond – the representative however said Jordan was unavailable, and that the DA will not resign.

Right place, wrong turn Friday, Oct 26 2007

So I am enroute to Lafayette Square to see my buddy Tab Benoit at the Wednesday’s in the Square concert. I am heading down Earhart towards the city, pass Carrollton, and I am almost to the dome.

I come to a point where I say, I am going to cross over now and get over by the Post Office and start looking for a parking spot. I come to a strange stop sign and a very strange directional sign. It has the thru traffic instructions (this lane turns left, this lane stays center)etc, but it’s full of LED lights. I say to myself, “wow, look at this, it’s a pretty cool sign…why is it out here in the city?”

SO, I take my left and I am headed towards the post office. I proceed to get on an on-ramp that is going to bring me down by Lee Circle. Except there is no offramp. Infact, there doesn’t seem to be an offramp at all. The I-10 traffic is to my right on the next bridge. What the hell is going on here? My altitude keeps climbing and climbing. This is not where I am supposed to be. I keep driving and I see that now the Tchopitoulas exit sign is behind me (I am still not on the I-10, I am next to it on a long runway moving towards the river). Tchop is the last exit….and here comes the bridges. As you can imagine, if you know me, every explative has come out of my mouth. I now figure this ramp that I am on will merge with the I-10. Nope….I am channled on the bridge with OUTGOING traffic headed TOWARDS me. I am on the LEFT bridge going towards the westbank. There is one car infront of me doing the same thing. I have no idea what is going on. The next thing I know, I am over the river and trying to get off at Gen DeGaulle to turn around.

I had taken a “wrong” turn on the commuter lane which is for high occupancy vehicles. I found out later I could have gotten a ticket for taking it (because I had only one person in the car). If you can imagine me driving with the feeling like I was going to fall off the end of the world….that was pretty much it. In my traveling in New Orleans, I had NO IDEA this existed.

After paying my toll to get back across the river, I finally got the square and the show was half over.

Moral of story: When you see a neat looking sign in the middle of inner city, don’t follow it.
